Tuscany, a land rich in history—a history that I have always felt pulsating in my veins, driven by my innate passion for the Middle Ages and for castles, especially those of my homeland. Tuscany, with its unmistakable landscapes, stretching from the sea to the mountains, crossing hills dotted with natural and architectural treasures.
The cities of art and culture, like Florence, Siena, Pisa and more with their historic centers, museums, basilicas, and cathedrals, attract thousands of tourists in every season. But for those who, like me, explore Tuscany with attentive eyes and a heart rooted in history, another definition emerges, one that goes beyond common perceptions: Medieval Tuscany.
In every corner of the region, small villages and large cities alike preserve intact the traces of their medieval past, with their fortified architectures. Castles, fortresses, towers, walled cities, and fortified villages stand as continuous reminders, sometimes unnoticed, because they have always been part of the landscape.
These structures are not just monuments but stories of a time when people, driven by the need to defend themselves, built these imposing testimonies of strength and ingenuity. By sharing my interest in the Middle Ages and ancient fortifications on these pages, I invite you to rediscover these places, many of which lie off the beaten tourist paths, offering a unique perspective on a lesser-known yet equally captivating Tuscany.
