How to reach
The Ponte della Dogana is located in the municipality of Fabbriche di Vergemoli, in the province of Lucca. From Lucca, it can be reached in approximately 45 minutes by following the SS12 Brennero Road to Borgo a Mozzano, then continuing along the provincial road towards Fabbriche di Vergemoli. Once you arrive near the bridge, you can park in the nearby parking areas and reach it with a short walk.
History
Nestled among the woodlands of the Turrite Valley, in the municipality of Fabbriche di Vergemoli, the Ponte della Dogana (Customs Bridge), also known as Ponte Colandi, is one of Garfagnana's most charming historic bridges. Built of local stone and spanning the waters of the Turrite Cava Stream, it still connects the two sides of the ancient village of Fabbriche di Vallico, preserving the charm of its long history.
Set within one of the valley's most picturesque landscapes, surrounded by forests, streams, and mountains, the bridge remains in daily use by both residents and visitors and has become one of the area's most recognizable landmarks.
A Bridge on an Ancient Border
The name "Ponte della Dogana" ("Customs Bridge") derives from the building overlooking the bridge, which once served as a customs house. The bridge was built during the 14th century by local craftsmen at the point where the border between the Duchy of Modena (later the Duchy of Este) and the Republic of Lucca once ran. This was where goods crossing between the two states were inspected and customs duties were collected.
Next to the former customs house, a small prison cell can still be seen. According to historical records preserved by the municipality, it was used to detain people who failed to pay taxes on iron production, one of the valley's most important economic activities for centuries.
Architecture
Constructed from local sandstone, the Ponte della Dogana features the classic humpback arch design that characterizes many medieval Tuscan bridges. Its elegant single arch and simple yet robust construction have enabled it to withstand the passage of time, and today it remains in excellent condition, serving as a pedestrian bridge.
The Turrite Cava Stream
Beneath the bridge flows the clear waters of the Turrite Cava Stream, close to its confluence with a smaller tributary. This section of the valley is particularly appreciated for its unspoilt natural beauty, with crystal-clear waters, dense forests, and dramatic rocky cliffs creating one of the most scenic landscapes in Garfagnana.
